A 40-bed long-term acute care facility, Regional Hospital, said Wednesday it intends to affiliate with Tacoma-based Franciscan Health System.
The non-profit Tukwila hospital offers extended critical care to patients.
The Regional Hospital affiliation if the latest in a string of expansions for Franciscan.
When the affiliation is approved by state regulators and by both Regional's and Franciscan's boards, Regional will move from Highline Medical Center's specialty campus in Tukwila to Highline's main campus in Burien.
Highline Medical Center earlier this year became part of Franciscan's three-county system of hospitals and clinics.
The affiliation process is expected to be completed as early as next summer.
“By joining Franciscan, we can continue to offer our highly specialized, long-term care services to critically ill and injured patients throughout the Pacific Northwest,” said Anne McBride, Regional’s chief executive officer in a news release. “We look forward to partnering with Franciscan to enhance the management of patients who need advanced acute care services.”
Both Franciscan and Regional will benefit from the relationship, said Joe Wilczek, Franciscan's chief executive officer.
“Franciscan is developing a comprehensive range of services to ensure patients receive high quality and efficient care at the lowest possible cost as they move from clinics to hospitals and back into the community or other facilities,” said Wilczek.
Regional Hospital specializes in offering extended critical care and is considered the leader in mechanical ventilator weaning for patients experiencing respiratory complications or failure. These conditions can result from a serious illness such as stroke or from a catastrophic injury such as spinal cord injury and paralysis, Franciscan said in a statement.
After Regional moves to Highline's Burien campus, the hospital will continue to operate as a separate entity within the hospital with its own CEO, chief medical officer and board.
In recent years, Franciscan has greatly expanded its network of health care facilities. Those facilities include St. Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma; St. Francis Hospital, Federal Way; St. Clare Hospital, Lakewood; St. Elizabeth Hospital, Enumclaw; St. Anthony Hospital, Gig Harbor; Highline Medical Center, Burien; Harrison Medical Center and Harrison HealthPartners in Kitsap County.
