Four people were taken to area hospitals Thursday afternoon after a 6-car crash in Tacoma, authorities said.

The collision happened about 1:15 p.m. at South 19th and South I streets. Investigators blocked off South 19th between J Street and Yakima Avenue.

A 31-year-old Tacoma man was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run, reckless endangerment, driving on a suspended license and driving without an ignition lock.

Witnesses told police the man was speeding more than 50 miles per hour when he ran a stop sign and struck another vehicle head-on. That vehicle then spun and hit a third car.

The suspect’s SUV continued on and hit three parked cars before flipping and landing on the driver’s side on the back of a vehicle, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said

Cool said the driver then kicked or punched out the window and fled the scene. Two witnesses followed him several blocks until officers arrived to take him into custody.
