Cheap taxis to be offered Saturday on Tacoma's 6th Avenue

Staff writerSeptember 26, 2013

A new program kicking off Saturday will offer free or cheap taxi rides for those who drink too much on Tacoma’s 6th Avenue.

The “Choose Your Ride” program is ran by volunteers and supported by business owners in the area. Four car companies – Fair Fares, JR Cab, Aloha and Alien car services – are participating.

The first 25 groups to ask for a taxi near Pine Street and 6th Avenue will be given free vouchers for a ride anywhere in the city. After that, inebriated drivers can receive vouchers for a $10 flat-rate ride.

Volunteers in white baseball caps marked “Choose Your Ride” will be in the area handing out vouchers.

“We’re saying go have fun and party, just don’t drive,” said Gloria Mansfield Averill, spokeswoman for the Tacoma-Pierce County DUI & Traffic Safety Task Force.
