Seven gates within Olympic National Forest will be clsed and locked for the winter beginning Tuesday. The closures will last through April 30, according to an Olympic National Forest news release.
The closures will be on Road 2451 in the North Fork Skokomish River watershed; Road 2354, 2353, and 2361 in the South Fork Skokomish area; and on Road 2294 (two gates) and Road 2270 in the Wynoochee River watershed.
These closures are part of a memorandum of understanding between the forest and state Department of Fish & Wildlife. The closures are designed to increase wildlife utilization of habitat, reduce the siltation of lakes and streams, diversify recreational hunting opportunities, reduce harassment levels on deer and elk and increase the survival rate of buck deer and bull elk.
The closures apply only to motorized vehicles. Accessing the road systems behind the gates by hiking or riding a mountain biking is still permissible.
