2 die when car hits pole, splits into three pieces near Summit

Staff writerSeptember 29, 2013

The driver and passenger of a 1995 Honda Accord died early Sunday when the vehicle hit a pole and split into three pieces just south of Summit, Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The men, both 23-year-olds from Bonney Lake, are Zachary Erickson and Steven Melot, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office said.

The crash happened about 3:30 a.m. when the car was heading north on Canyon Road East at 128th Street East.

Troyer said the force of the impact and evidence at the scene leads investigators to believe speed and possibly alcohol were involved, but said no one witnessed the crash and that test results as to whether the men had been drinking were not back yet.

It was not immediately clear which man had been driving.

A passerby saw the wreckage and called 911.
