Federal Way police investigating two attempted child abductions

Staff writerOctober 7, 2013

Federal Way police are trying to determine whether two attempted child abductions over the weekend are related.

They released a composite sketch this afternoon of a Hispanic man wearing a sideways reddish purple baseball cap and a red bandana around his neck and are asking anyone with information to call detectives.

The first incident happened about 5:20 p.m. Saturday as an 8-year-old girl crossed the playfield at Brigadoon Elementary School, 3601 SW 336th St. Police said the man approached the girl and offered her candy. The girl said no and tried to run but stumbled.

The man grabbed her from behind but the girl was able to scratch and bite his hands until he let her go, police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said.

The second incident happened about 11:30 a.m. Sunday when a man tried to grab a 7-year-old boy in the same area. The boy escaped and the man fled on foot. Officers searched the neighborhood with a tracking dog but did not find the suspect.

Schrock said police are reviewing surveillance footage from the school.

The man was 30 to 50 years old and wearing a blue T-shirt, tighter tan pants, black shoes, a red bandana around his neck and a reddish purple hat sideways on his head.

Anyone with information is asked to call detective Michael Coffey at 253-835-6777 or email him at Michael.coffeyy@cityoffederalway.com.
