Federal Way police were trying to determine Monday whether two attempted child abductions over the weekend were related.
They released a composite sketch of a Hispanic man wearing a sideways reddish purple baseball cap and a red bandana around his neck. Anyone with information about the man was asked to call detectives.
The first incident happened about 5:20 p.m. Saturday as an 8-year-old girl crossed the playfield at Brigadoon Elementary School, 3601 SW 336th St. Police said the man approached the girl and offered her candy. The girl said no and tried to run but stumbled.
The man grabbed her from behind, but the girl was able to scratch and bite his hands until he let her go, police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said.
The second incident happened about 11:30 a.m. Sunday when a man tried to grab a 7-year-old boy in the same area. The boy escaped, and the man ran away. Officers searched the neighborhood with a tracking dog but did not find the man.
Schrock said police were reviewing surveillance footage from the school.
The girl described the man as being between 30 and 50 and wearing a blue T-shirt, tight tan pants, black shoes, a red bandana and a reddish purple hat.
