Burglary suspect in custody following Puyallup SWAT standoff

UPDATE as of 1:22 p.m.: Police have arrested the suspected burglar, who is believed to have taken a rifle from a nearby home. No injuries were reported.

EARLIER STORY: A SWAT team is evacuating residents in a Puyallup neighborhood while they try to negotiate with an armed man suspected of burglarizing a nearby home, police said.

The man allegedly stole items from a house about 9 a.m. and then returned to his own home near 5th Avenue Northwest and 3rd Street Northwest. Witnesses directed police to the home, which Capt. Scott Engle said is the second-floor of a house that has been converted into an apartment.

SWAT is setting up armored vehicles and asking a dozen or so residents to leave their homes until the incident is resolved. Several roads have been blocked off.

The alleged burglar hasn’t responded to police commands or attempts to talk, Engle said.

UPDATE as of 1 p.m.:

5 AV NW is closed between 4 ST NW and 2 ST NW and 3 ST NW is closed between 4 AV NW and 6 AV NW. 4 St NW is still open.
