Staff writerOctober 25, 2013

A man suspected of stealing a rifle from a neighboring house was arrested Thursday after a four-hour standoff in Puyallup.

Police were called about 9 a.m. after someone spotted a person break into the house and then go to a home near Fifth Avenue Northwest and Third Street Northwest.

Officers ordered the armed man to come outside and made several attempts to speak with him, Capt. Scott Engle said. After hours of no response, a SWAT team was called in about 1 p.m. and two armored vehicles were set up in the yard of the house.

Engle described the living quarters as a converted apartment on the second floor.

A dozen or so neighbors were moved from the neighborhood during the standoff, which ended about 1:40 p.m. when the man was taken into custody.
