SWAT called out for Gig Harbor woman, 86, accused of shooting at neighbors

Staff writerOctober 25, 2013

An 86-year-old Gig Harbor woman was taken into custody Thursday night after firing a shotgun at several neighboring homes, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

A handful of people called 911 about 7 p.m. to report that the woman was shooting at houses in the 800 block of Whiteman Road Key Peninsula South.

The woman has mental health issues and has shot at neighbors in the past, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

“She thinks people trespass on her property at night and she said she’d shoot and kill them,” he said. “Because of the fog, she saw some lights and thought somebody was on her property.”

Shotgun pellets struck several nearby homes but nobody was injured.

A SWAT team was called to negotiate with the woman, who eventually put down her gun and surrendered. She was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated assault.
