8 state teachers finalists for award

Eight teachers from Washington have been selected as state-level finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, increasing the number of finalists each state can submit per subject from three to five.

A statewide committee of content-area experts and award-winning teachers selected the finalists during the summer.

The award is considered one of the highest honors for a K-12 mathematics or science teacher. Local teachers – Tracie Shepard from Emerald Ridge High School, Puyallup, and George Christoph from River Ridge High School, North Thurston – were named as finalists in mathematics
