A Lakewood couple died in an apartment fire early Wednesday after the husband ran back inside to try to help his ill wife escape.

The couple has not yet been identified. The man was 64; the woman was 78.

The blaze was reported just before 1 a.m. at the Morningtree Park apartments in the 8100 block of 83rd Ave. SW. West Pierce Fire & Rescue crews arrived within six minutes and found residents fleeing the building, spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy said.

Residents told firefighters the couple probably was still inside the apartment, which was where the fire started, McCurdy said.

At some point, the husband ran out of the couple’s apartment and yelled for help before running back inside to assist his wife, Lakewood police said. Neighbors said the woman had been ill and was unable to move around.

Firefighters extinguished the flames about 1:25 a.m. and found two bodies inside the unit.

The fire destroyed the couple’s apartment and severely damaged the two on each side of it. The Red Cross was helping six people find temporary housing.

Cause of the fire was being investigated, but it was believed to have started in the living room.

Capt. Jenny Weekes said the couple’s apartment had smoke alarms, but it was unknown whether they were working.
