Don’t wait until dark to leave Mount Rainier

The News TribuneNovember 1, 2013

Visitors hoping to have some fun at Paradise should be aware that the gates close each night from now through May.

Visitors planning to make the drive to Paradise should be aware that the gate at Longmire will be closed each evening starting Friday.

The opening of the gate each morning depends on the weather and road conditions. The opening might be delayed if the park’s snow removal crews need additional time to clear the road of snow, ice and other debris.

You can get updates on the gate’s status at mountrainiernps.

The nightly closure coincides with the requirement that all vehicles must carry tire chains when traveling in the park during the winter season from Friday through May 1. This requirement applies to all vehicles, including those with four-wheel drive, and regardless of tire type or weather conditions.

State routes 410 and 123 on the east side of the park remain open. They are tentatively scheduled to close Dec. 2, depending on weather and snow conditions.

Bicyclists and hikers still can access the White River area, including the Sunrise Road, but all facilities are closed.
