Roche Harbor salmon derby winner could earn $40,000

Anglers competing in the 2014 Roche Harbor salmon derby could land a fish worth $40,000.

The 11th annual Roche Harbor Salmon Classic Invitational is set for Feb. 6-8 and offers a guaranteed first prize of $10,000. If the winning fish weighs more than 30 pounds, the winning angler will earn a $30,000 bonus.

While a record 196 salmon were weighed during the 2013 derby, the winning fish, caught by Pete Nelsen of Shaw Island, weighed 16.7 pounds.

Second place will pay $5,000, while third place is good for $3,000.

The entry fee is $700 per boat with up to four anglers. The derby has a 100-boat limit.

The derby also is the first of the year that is part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series. Participants in the series are entered to win an outfitted fishing boat.
