Vehicle of missing Tacoma man, with remains inside, found over Packwood cliff

Staff writerNovember 7, 2013

Investigators found a wrecked vehicle registered to a Tacoma man reported missing last year over a Packwood cliff Thursday with human remains inside, the Lewis County Sheriff's Office said.

Two men hiking found the wreck and remains Wednesday afternoon and immediately contacted the Sheriff's Office.

The terrain was too dangerous to traverse at night, investigators said, so they started the search and recovery Thursday morning.

The Sheriff's Office is not releasing the name of the missing Tacoma man.

The coroner's office has not yet confirmed his identity.

It appears the vehicle was traveling at highway speeds when it left U.S. Highway 12 at mile 143.5, where there is no guard rail, and plunged down the 275-foot embankment, investigators said.
