UPDATE: Trooper Guy Gill said speed was a factor, and that investigators confirmed that the vehicle hit curbing on the 21st Street exit, and vaulted over the barrier of the overpass back onto I-705.

INITIAL POST: A 43-year-old Tacoma man died in a one-car crash at southbound Interstate 705 and South 21st Street Monday night, according to the State Patrol.

The man was the driver and only occupant of the 2008 Audi involved in the crash that happened about 7 p.m., trooper Guy Gill said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released his name.

Investigators were still determining the circumstances of the crash, but Gill said it was caused by the driver.

Troopers thought it was possible the man took the exit to South 21st Street from the southbound Interstate, hit the concrete curb at the top of the ramp, and vaulted over the railing and back down onto I-705, Gill said, but had not yet confirmed that.
