Lakewood woman died from strangulation; boyfriend arrested

Staff writerNovember 13, 2013

A Lakewood woman was fatally strangled Wednesday, and police arrested her boyfriend.

The 32-year-old man called 911 about 4 a.m. and told dispatchers his girlfriend was unresponsive and needed help.

Paramedics arrived at the Pacific Walk apartments in the 8300 block of 31st Avenue South and pronounced 33-year-old Angela Cannizzio-Brooks dead.

The paramedics summoned police because they thought the death seemed suspicious.

The cause of death was strangulation, and it was a homicide, the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The boyfriend told police he had been arguing with his girlfriend, they got into a physical fight, and that he lost control and hit her with an upright vacuum a few times, police Lt. Chris Lawler said in a release.

The suspect said the woman appeared to lose consciousness, and he dragged her downstairs and continued assaulting her in the living room, Lawler said.
