Garbage truck strikes power pole in Tacoma

UPDATE: The driver was able to leave the truck uninjured once crews shut off power.

INITIAL REPORT: A garbage truck struck a power pole in a Tacoma alley today, and the driver is trapped in his truck due to downed power lines, according to the Tacoma Fire Department.

The accident happened about 10:20 a.m. at South 55th Street and Pacific Avenue.

Fire engines have blocked access to the alley, and a Tacoma Public Utility crew is en route to cut power to the lines so the truck driver can escape.

He does not appear to be injured.
