Body found in vehicle over Packwood cliff identified as missing Tacoma man

Staff writerNovember 13, 2013

The remains found in a vehicle over a cliff in Packwood last week are those of a Tacoma man who went missing last year, the Lewis County Coroner said Wednesday.

Jerry Heilman, 50, died from blunt force, Coroner Warren McLeod said.

The manner of his death had not been determined.

Heilman, an avid hunter and fisherman, left his Tacoma home Aug. 1, 2012 and had not contacted anyone since, police said.

Two men hiking found Heilman's vehicle Nov. 6 down a 275-foot embankment at mile 143.5 of U.S. Highway 12.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office said it appeared the vehicle was traveling at highway speed when it left the road and went over the cliff, where there is no guard rail.
