Downtown Tacoma’s holiday ice rink will open for business in a week and will feature more special events.
After it opens Friday, the Franciscan Polar Plaza will host a skate party sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Tacoma from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 24. Members of the Kent Valley Skating Club will help all skaters. Tickets, which are $4 and include skate rental, are available at the children’s museum’s website, playtacoma.org.
After the skate party, the Seattle Thunderbirds hockey team will be on hand with their mascot, Cool Bird, beginning at 2 p.m.
Other events at the rink this year include:
- Karaoke on select Fridays.
- Broomball league, 8-10 p.m. Dec. 3 and 10.
- Special theme nights every Thursday along with hands-on art-making activities.
- A photobooth.
- Live music every Saturday.
General admission is $8, plus $2 for skate rental. Admission for children ages 5 and younger is $4. Military members and seniors (65-plus) receive $1 off admission. Discounted tickets can be bought at select Costco stores or at costco.com
Skates will be available from a child’s size 6 through an adult size 14. This year the rink will offer double-bladed skates for the younger kids.
As a bonus, skaters will receive 50 percent off admission to Tacoma Art Museum with a valid receipt from Franciscan Polar Plaza.
