Cayuse Pass closes for winter

Staff writerNovember 20, 2013

Visitors to the east side of Mount Rainier National Park will not be able to travel state Route 123 now that the state transportation department has closed Cayuse Pass for the season.

But the department says conditions at nearby Chinook Pass on state Route 410 are more favorable and it reopened at noon Wednesday – for now, the Associated Press reported.

Both passes were closed earlier this week because snow and avalanche conditions made travel dangerous.

At some point, transportation officials will close Chinook Pass for the season.
