Man fatally shot by South Prairie homeowner identified

Staff writerNovember 20, 2013

A man fatally shot by a South Prairie homeowner Monday night was identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office Wednesday as 21-year-old Cole Mathews, of Enumclaw.

Mathews crashed his car outside a home in the 25700 block of 164th Street East just after 11 p.m., started "banging on doors and breaking house windows," and eventually punched the 67-year-old homeowner who went to investigate, Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The homeowner fired at least two rounds from his handgun, killing Mathews, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Troyer said Mathews did not know the couple, and that it was not clear why he crashed his vehicle and broke into the home.

Detectives believe marijuana was involved, but toxicology results were not immediately available, Troyer said.
