Law enforcement in Pierce County will be increasing DUI patrols through the holiday season.

Extra officers will be patrolling the roads from Wednesday until Jan. 1 as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

An average of 49 people were killed in traffic accidents statewide from 2008 to 2012, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

The agency urges people to call 911 if they spot suspected drunken drivers.

Participating departments include Bonney Lake, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Puyallup, Sumner, Tacoma and University Place police, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the State Patrol.
