Work begins next week on downtown Tacoma's new YMCA

Tacoma News TribuneNovember 26, 2013

University of Washington Tacoma will hold a ground-breaking ceremony Monday, Dec. 2, for a YMCA facility on campus.

The University Y is a $20 million, three-story facility on the corner of South 17th and Market streets, across from the Court 17 apartments. It will house a fitness facility as well as space for student activities, including student-government offices.

UWT students pay for a membership as part of student fees. That membership will gain them access to all YMCA facilities in Pierce County.

Mortenson Construction of Kirkland and McGranahan Architects of Tacoma are the design-build team. The facility could be open as early as late 2014.

The ceremony is from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. The school requests RSVPs online or by calling 253-692-5753.
