"Will do push-ups for cash"

Bates fire service students ready for annual holiday fundraiser

Tacoma News TribuneNovember 27, 2013

Fire service students will raise money for other students in need.

Bates Technical College employees and students will brave cold temperatures during the morning hours Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 to help raise funds for Bates students in need at the 22nd annual Holiday Meal Drive.

The college’s Fire Service program will light up Tacoma's Yakima Avenue from 11th to Earnest S. Brazill streets with ladder and fire trucks, and join volunteers to help collect cash donations from 6:30-10 a.m. Throughout the two-day fundraiser, Fire Service students will continue the annual tradition of performing push-ups for donations.

For the second year, event organizers have partnered with Fred Meyer to provide one ready-made holiday meal per recipient. Last year, the drive raised more than $10,000, which organizers used to purchase food for about 175 students.
