GAME NOTES: Still searching for its first win of the season, Weber State welcomes the San Jose State Spartans to Ogden on Saturday night for a none- conference clash at the Dee Events Center.
Weber State led Utah State at halftime in the team's first home game of the season on Tuesday but allowed its opponent to shoot 63 percent from the field after the break, resulting in a 77-71 loss to keep the Wildcats winless despite the fact that three players are averaging at least 14 points per game.
San Jose State, which has won the past three meetings against Weber State, has also gotten off to a rough start and has a relatively quick turnaround following Thursday's 86-69 drubbing at Portland. The loss ended a brief two- game win streak, following four straight defeats to start the 2013-14 campaign.
The Spartans hold a 3-2 series advantage over Weber State.
Davion Berry, who poured in 21 points against Utah State, and leads the way for Weber State with 18.7 ppg, Kyle Tresnak sits second at 14.3 and freshman Jeremy Senglin has scored 14 points in all three games in his young career.
The problem for the Wildcats hasn't been scoring, but rather their defense, which has allowed opponents to score 82 ppg, while shooting a robust 49.2 percent from the floor. Weber State is also getting outrebounded by four boards per contest and has 15 more turnovers than takeaways.
Rashad Muhammad dropped in 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, but the rest of the team combined to shoot 31.3 percent from the floor in San Jose State's loss to the Pilots. Portland outscored its adversary in the paint, 40-22, and netted 21 points off of 14 SJSU turnovers.
Jaleel Williams is second to Muhammed in scoring on the season at 13.0 ppg, while leading the team in rebounds at 6.1 rebounds per contest. Muhammed comes off the bench but has played a team-high 30.0 minutes a game. He makes the most of his time on the floor as he nets 16.4 ppg and connects on 41 percent of his shots.
Last year's contest between these teams was decided in overtime. Expect another tight one with the home team finally getting a much-needed win.
