Cause of fatal Fox Island fire not yet determined

Staff writerDecember 11, 2013

Investigators will return to Fox Island Thursday after they weren't able to determine Wednesday what caused a fatal blaze there last week, Pierce County Fire Marshal Warner Webb said.

Dr. Thomas Babson, 62, and his 8-year-old daughter Alice died in the fire, which started Dec. 4 at their home in the 400 block of Sixth Avenue Northwest.

Webb has said officials believe the fire was accidental, but that investigators have not figured out what caused it.

"They're still kind of spinning in a direction, not finding anything," Webb said. "The insurance company has a whole bunch of investigators out there. They're still looking at it."

Webb said investigators are looking around the point of origin of the fire, the kitchen and dining area, to figure out what things are there, and what might be missing.

Babson's wife, June, their 12-year-old daughter Katie, and 8-year-old son Tobey (Alice's twin) survived the fire.
