Scammers are pretending to be Washington's Department of Labor & Industries to threaten business owners if they fail to buy workplace posters for nearly $300.
The department said official-looking letters sent to dozens of businesses threaten owners with fines if they fail to buy and post the signs.
The agency said it didn't send out the letters, and the posters to which it refers are available for free from Labor & Industries.
The letters are marked "final notice" and include an order form to buy the posters for $295.
While state and federal agencies require certain posters about wages and working conditions be posted at work sites, those posters are available at no cost.
Our staff has received lots of calls regarding what appears to be a bill for government posters, said Anne Foote-Soiza, assistant director of L&Is Division of Occupational Health and Safety. L&I wants everyone to understand these posters are free for the asking. Please let other business owners know about it, too.
The free state-required posters are available from any L&I office or by calling 866-219-7321or downloading from the L&I website at posters.lni.wa.gov.
