Three horses died and one was seriously injured early Friday morning after being struck by a semitrailer north of Poulsbo, said officials with the Washington State Patrol.

The collision happened on State Route 3 just before 3 a.m.

Troopers said four horses were walking on the roadway when a semi, passing Big Valley Road, hit the animals.

The 27-year-old driver stopped his vehicle, which blocked the northbound lane.
