Recap: Marshall vs. West Virginia

Charleston, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Staten scored 19 points and had four assists as the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the Marshall Thundering Herd, 74-64, in the Capital Classic at the Charleston Civic Center.

Terry Henderson scored 13 points for the Mountaineers (7-4), Brandon Watkins tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards, Gary Browne added 12 points as Eron Harris had 11 as the team snapped a two-game slide.

Kareem Canty led Marshall (4-6) with 16 points and nine assists. TyQuane Goard and Chris Thomas had 11 points apiece in the squad's fourth consecutive setback.

West Virginia turned the ball over 11 times which allowed Marshall to attempt 10 more shots in the first period. Marshall took a 33-31 lead into the intermission as it shot 41.2 percent from the floor and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers converted 50 percent and made 3-of-10 from 3-point range.

Marshall's shooting didn't improve after the break as the Thundering Herd shot 42.3 percent from the floor. West Virginia took its final lead after Staten completed a 3-point play with 3:41 remaining. From there the Mountaineers went on a 14-2 run to secure the victory.

WVU's reserves played better than Marshall's by outscoring the Thundering Herd 27-19 in bench points.
