Recap: Southern Miss vs. Coppin State

Tortola, BVI (SportsNetwork.com) - Daveon Boardingham scored 14 points off the bench as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles came up with an 88-74 win over the Coppin State Eagles during the opening round of the BVI Tropical Shootout at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex.

Boardingham, who converted all six of his field goal chances, also logged four blocked shots for the Golden Eagles (10-2) as they posted their fourth win in the last five games. Jerrold Brooks added 13 points and six assists, Michael Craig 12 points and seven rebounds, followed by Neil Watson with 11 points and a game-high eight dishes.

Michael Murray scored a game-high 23 points for Coppin State (4-6) as the team lost for the second time in as many outings. Andre Armstrong chipped in 16 points off the bench.

Coppin State shot an impressive 52.4 percent from the floor in the first half, but at the same time the Golden Eagles connected on 63.6 percent from the field in order to take a 50-34 advantage at the break.

In the second half the Eagles closed the gap slightly thanks to an 18-of-22 showing at the free-throw line, but that still wasn't enough to turn the tide completely. USM managed to make good on 53.8 percent from the floor in the period, but just 2-of-9 on the outside and 8-of-18 at the charity stripe.

Southern Miss, which led the entire way, outscored the Eagles in the paint by a 54-30 margin.
