Honolulu, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Demetrius Treadwell registered a double- double with 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Akron Zips captured an 83-71 win over the Oregon State Beavers in the opening round of the annual Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Treadwell shot 7-of-10 from the floor and 10-of-13 at the free-throw line, not to mention posting four assists for the Zips (6-2) as they won their fifth straight outing. Also scoring in double figures for Akron were Nyles Evans and Quincy Diggs with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

The Beavers (6-3) were paced by Roberto Nelson with 20 points, but while he made good on all but one of his 11 free-throw attempts, he shot a mere 4-of-15 from the floor as the team had a three-game win streak snapped. Devon Collier pitched in with 10 points and five rebounds in the setback.

The Zips opened the meeting on a 10-0 run and led by as many as 14 in the period before Oregon State battled back in the final minutes to trail by just a single point at 35-34 at the break. Akron converted 5-of-10 shots behind the 3-point line in the period, compared to 2-of-4 for the Beavers.

In the second half, while hitting a perfect 15-of-15 at the free-throw line, the Beavers missed on all six chances on the perimeter and made a total of just 11 field goals in the frame, en route to the double-digit loss in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

More than anything else, the Zips came up with the win thanks to a 30-6 scoring edge beyond the arc.

With the victory Akron will now take on Iowa State on the winner's side of the bracket in the semifinal round of the tournament on Monday.
