New YMCA in Sumner to be named after longtime regional employer

Staff writerDecember 23, 2013

The long-awaited YMCA in Sumner has a new name ahead of its springtime groundbreaking.

The recreation center will be named after the Gordon family, due to the "abundant support" from the longtime Sumner residents and regional employers, according to a news release from the YMCA.

Gordon Trucking has employed nearly 1,000 residents in and around the area since 1946.

“We are humbled to have the Gordon family – who is so engrained in the community - give so generously to what will be the community hub of Sumner and serve an expected 22,000 people,” YMCA President and CEO Bob Ecklund said in the release.

The 110,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to open in the summer of 2015. Construction is set to begin in April.
