GAME NOTES: The San Francisco Dons and Portland Pilots open up their West Coast Conference schedules tonight, as they square off at the Chiles Center.
The Dons wrapped up their non-conference slate with a 77-69 victory over American last Sunday. Avry Holmes scored a team-high 15 points, while Tim Derksen added 13 points and Cole Dickerson tallied 11 for San Francisco, which has alternated losses and wins over its last four games, and has not won consecutive contests since ending the month of November with back-to-back victories.
Dickerson leads the Dons in scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 14.4 points and 7.6 boards per contest, while Kruize Pinkins (12.7) and Mark Tollefsen (12.2) round out the double-figures scorers for San Francisco, which ranks third in the WCC with an 81.5 ppg average.
The Pilots are coming off a pair of wins to capture the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. Bryce Pressley scored a career-high 25 points, as Portland raced by Princeton, 93-79, in the final. Pressley was named the tournament MVP, as the Pilots have won five of their last six outings to improve to 8-4 on the season.
Junior guard Kevin Bailey leads the Pilots and ranks fifth in the WCC in scoring with 17.1 ppg. He has reached double figures in all but two games this year. Senior forward Ryan Nicholas, meanwhile, is the WCC leader in rebounding (9.7 rpg), and is second on the team in scoring (13.5 ppg).
Junior center Thomas van der Mars has had a breakout year, averaging 12.4 points and 6.7 boards per game, helping the Pilots average 80.2 ppg.
San Francisco has dominated this series of late, taking 21 of the 27 meetings. This game will likely be a high-scoring affair.
