El Paso, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Vince Hunter finished with 14 points, including the game-winning jumper with 43 seconds remaining to lift the Texas- El Paso Miners to a 67-64 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks as part of the Sun Bowl Invitational at the Don Haskins Center.
Leading the way for UTEP (9-5) was Julian Washburn, who netted 18 points on 6- of-17 from the field. John Bohannon tallied a double-double for the hosts with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
For WIU (5-8), Garret Covington scored 16 points, while Tate Stensgaard added 10 points.
WIU outshot UTEP from the field in the first half, 46.4 percent to 37.5 percent, as it carried a 29-28 lead into intermission. The Miners kept the game close by outscoring the Leathernecks at the foul line in the first 20 minutes, 8-1.
The Leathernecks used a 10-0 run early in the second half to separate themselves and led by 10 with under five minutes to play before UTEP made its move. The Miners ended the game on a 17-4 run, with Hunter's jumper proving to be the game-winner. C.J. Cooper put the game on ice in the waning seconds with a 2-of-2 trip to the foul line to secure the three-point win.
The difference was made at the foul line, where UTEP shot 29-of-39. WIU was only 11-of-16 from the stripe.
