Charter school group to host public forums in Tacoma

The News TribuneDecember 30, 2013

The Washington State Charter School Commission will host nine public forums across the state in January, including four in Tacoma. The purpose is to hear directly from 19 applicants that want to open charter schools in Washington and to hear from members of the communities in which the charter schools would be located.

Forums will include 10-minute presentations from the applicants, then 30 minutes of public comment, with each speaker limited to two minutes. Speakers will be randomly selected in a lottery prior to the meeting.

Four applications to open charter schools in the Tacoma area have been received by the commission. Those applications will be discussed in the following meetings:

 • Summit Public School-Olympus: 5-6 p.m. Jan. 22, Tacoma Main Library, 1102 Tacoma Ave. S., Tacoma.

 • Green Dot Public Schools: 6-7 p.m. Jan. 22, also at the Tacoma Main Library.

n SOAR Academy, 5-6 p.m. Jan. 23, Bates Technical College South Campus, 2201 S. 78th St., Tacoma. Building E, Auditorium 102 and 103.

 • The Village Academy, 6-7 p.m. Jan. 23, also at the Bates College location.

For information on other forums, contact the commission at 360-725-5511.

Written comments (limited to one page in 12-point type) can also be submitted at the forums, or sent to Washington State Charter School Commission, P.O. Box 40996, Olympia, WA 98504-0996.
