Mount Rainier National Park will observe a moment of silence at 10:44 a.m. Wednesday in honor of ranger Margaret Anderson.
Anderson was shot and killed on Jan. 1, 2012, by a park visitor she stopped after he refused to stop at a snow tire checkpoint. Anderson died at the scene. The gunman fled into the wilderness and was found dead, drowned in Paradise River, the next day.
Before the moment of silence park dispatch will read the following statement over the radio: “Ranger Margaret Anderson was shot and killed in the line of duty at Barn Flat in Mount Rainier National Park on January 1, 2012 at approximately 10:44 am. She gave the ultimate sacrifice in a heroic effort which prevented an armed gunman from entering the congested visitor area at Paradise.”
Anderson’s family has moved but KeyBank in Eatonville maintains a donation account in her name. Donations can be made in person or mail to KeyBank, P.O. Box 159, Eatonville, WA 98328.
