14 people call 911 about alleged drunken driver in Lakewood

Staff writerJanuary 1, 2014

The suspected drunken driver so concerned others on the road that 14 people called 911 to report him this morning before he crashed his SUV in Lakewood and tried to run from state troopers.

Dispatchers began receiving calls at 11:55 a.m. about the Dodge Durango that was driving erratically, weaving in and out of lanes on southbound Interstate 5. Witnesses reported that the man behind the wheel exited Gravelly Lake Drive and got back onto I-5 headed north, repeatedly striking the inside barrier as he went.

Several troopers hurried to catch up to the driver, who crashed just north of Bridgeport Way.

“He struck the inside barrier and spun out, then ran across the lanes of I-5 on foot into an apartment complex,” trooper Guy Gill said.

The 32-year-old Auburn man was arrested on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license.
