Tacoma Fred Meyer evacuated after refrigerant douses room

Staff writerJanuary 2, 2014

The Fred Meyer grocery store at South 19th and South Mildred streets was evacuated Thursday after a broken pipe sprayed gas and liquid around a room in the building, according to Tacoma Fire.

Firefighters responded about 5:30 p.m. when the store's alarm went off, and clamped off the pipe.

Hazardous materials experts and the store's heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor arrived, and determined that the refrigerant and lubricant mixture that spewed across the room was not toxic, Tacoma Fire Battalion Chief Jim Zuluaga said.

It was about an hour after the evacuation that everyone was let back into the store.
