Tallahassee, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Akil Mitchell recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds as the Virginia Cavaliers downed the Florida State Seminoles, 62-50, in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both sides at the Tucker Center.
Justin Anderson scored a game-high 16 points for Virginia (10-4, 1-0 ACC), which received 14 points courtesy of London Perrantes. Malcolm Brogdon tallied 11 points and six boards in the win for the Cavaliers.
For the Seminoles (9-4, 0-1), Okaro White finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Although both teams struggled offensively in the first half, Virginia took a 30-17 lead into halftime after it shot 34.5 percent from the field. The Seminoles were limited to just 30 percent shooting from the floor and attempted nine less field goals than the visitors in the opening 20 minutes of action.
FSU connected on only 31.1 percent of its field goal tries including just 2- of-9 from 3-point range in the second stanza. Although Virginia converted only 12-of-24 free-throw attempts after halftime, it still managed to protect the advantage it built before the break.
Virginia enjoyed a 41-38 edge in the rebounding battle and committed only six turnovers compared to 16 by FSU.
