Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Holt scored a game-high 19 points as the Saint Mary's Gaels captured a 72-63 win over the Portland Pilots in West Coast Conference action at the Chiles Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Gaels (11-4, 2-1 WCC) were Beau Levesque and Brad Waldow with 16 and 13 points, respectively, the pair combining for 15 rebounds as the team won for the second time in the last three outings.
The Pilots (9-7, 1-3) were paced by Ryan Nicholas with 12 points, Alec Wintering 11 and both Kevin Bailey and Bobby Sharp with 10 points apiece.
Portland led by as many as seven points on a number of occasions in the first half, but even after shooting 9-of-10 at the free-throw line in the period the team had to settle for a 39-33 deficit at the break.
In the second half Portland converted a mere eight field goals, including 1- of-5 behind the 3-point line, allowing SMC to stay out in front and grab the nine-point road win.
The hosts shot only 38 percent from the field on the night.
