University Place has new mayor: Denise McCluskey

Tacoma News TribuneJanuary 7, 2014

The University Place City Council selected a new mayor at its meeting Monday night.

Denise McCluskey replaces Ken Grassi as mayor of the West Pierce suburban city, assuming the two-year post for the first time since joining the council in 2010. She previously held the title of mayor pro tem, who fills in when the mayor is absent.

Councilman Javier Figueroa was chosen to replace McCluskey as mayor pro tem. Figueroa was also elected to the council in 2010.

Grassi has been on the council since the city incorporated in 1996. He’s been mayor twice in that period. Traditionally the council rotates the titles between members so everyone has a chance to be the city’s figurehead, Grassi said.

University Place, with a population near 32,000, has a council-manager form of government where the council serves similar to a board of directors and the mayor is the chairman of the board.
