Work has started on South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity’s newest development in Thurston County and its first in Lacey. It’s a 33-home community that is expected to be finished in the next four to five years.
It’s also the largest development for the group, more than doubling the number of homes that were built at its 14-home Fairview Cottages development in Olympia.
The Lacey development, known as Wood’s Glen, is near the intersection of 37th Avenue and College Street Southeast.
It will feature a mix of houses, cottages and bungalows, ranging from 950 square feet to 1,400 square feet. The first three homes are under construction, including one sponsored by Anchor Bank, which contributed $50,000 to its construction, said Addie Candib, community partnership supervisor for Habitat for Humanity.
The homes comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. They also have fire sprinkler systems and environment-friendly components such as energy-efficient appliances, she said.
Wood’s Glen will have a community garden, and Habitat is working with Edible Forest Gardens to plant berries, herbs and fruit trees on the development. It also will have play structures for children.
Community Youth Services will team up with the New Market Skills Center to build a fence.
“We’re not just building a housing development, we’re building a community,” Candib said.
The homes are made available to qualifying low-income households, including “families suffering from chronic illness and disabilities, the frail elderly and veterans,” according to a news release.
Those who qualify for a home also must volunteer their time in the form of sweat equity, Candib said.
Construction costs are funded by several sources, including individual gifts, sponsorships, and proceeds from Habitat for Humanity stores, which sell a range of used building supplies.
Habitat has stores in west Olympia and Yelm.
Another recent Habitat for Humanity project is Shepherd’s Grove, a five-home development in Tumwater near Yelm Highway and Henderson Boulevard that was completed in June 2012.Rolf Boone: 360-754-5403 firstname.lastname@example.org
