GOLF: Tracking Michael Putnam on the PGA tour

todd.milles@thenewstribune.comJanuary 13, 2014

Last week: Sony Open, Thursday through Sunday, Waialae Country Club, Honolulu.

Fourth-round score: 3-under-par 67.

Position: Putnam (7-under 273) tied for 32nd, 10 strokes behind winner Jimmy Walker (17-under 263).

Recap: Not a bad way to kick off six consecutive tournaments in a row to start the 2014 PGA Tour season. And to make only eight bogeys total in four rounds on a course that has small greens has to be a positive sign for Putnam in the early going. After a couple of short-putt birdies at Nos. 12 and 16, the University Place golfer three-putted from 50 feet for his only bogey at the fifth hole. But at No. 6, he got the shot back by holing out from a greenside bunker for birdie.

Next: Humana Challenge starting Thursday at PGA West Palmer, PGA West Nicklaus and La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif. Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley will also be in the field for his 2014 debut.
