Lakewood to celebrate MLK day

Lakewood’s 11th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will carry the theme The Dream Begins: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The free event will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Clover Park Technical College.

The event features performers including The Total Experience Gospel Choir, The Prairie Bells, trumpeter Morris Northcutt, the Lakes High School Choir, the Chong Hee Suk drummers, the Grace Chapel Choir, the Freedom Dancers and others.

Nancy Bristow, professor of history at the University of Puget Sound, is the featured speaker.

The event also features a reading by the winner of the Clover Park School District’s Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest.
