Moraga, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Holt led all scorers with 26 points while dishing out seven assists as the Saint Mary's-CA Gaels downed the Pacific Tigers, 79-73, in a West Coast Conference battle at McKeon Pavilion.
For the Gaels (14-5, 4-2 WCC), Brad Waldow added 22 points and Kerry Carter finished with 21 points.
Tony Gill paced the Tigers (10-7, 1-5) with 16 points, while Trevin Harris, Andrew Bock and Sama Taku all scored 11 and Ross Rivera chipped in with 10.
Pacific was hot from the field in the first half, knocking down 57.9 percent of its field goal tries, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. St. Mary's shot 40 percent from the field in the half and 4-of-11 from deep. A 9-0 run by Pacific late in the half allowed them to build a double-digit lead, and they took a 38-31 lead into halftime.
The Gaels were hot from the floor after intermission, connecting on 57.9 percent of their shots and 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Tigers shot 44.4 percent from the field and 2-of-7 from 3-point range in the half. Trailing by two midway through the second, the Gaels used a 20-5 run over a five minute span to take control of the contest that they held on down the stretch for the victory.
The Gaels outscored the Tigers 31-22 at the free-throw line. Portland outrebounded St. Mary's, 29-25.
