No one hurt in fire that destroyed Lakewood home

Neighbors think squatters to blame

Staff writersJanuary 25, 2014

UPDATE as of Thursday: West Pierce said crews confirmed no one was in the home, but had not yet determined what caused the fire.

INITIAL POST: A three-story Lakewood house that neighbors say has been vacant for more than a year caught fire and burned Friday evening.

Neighbors suspect the fire was caused by squatters who they say have been using the home at the corner of Vernon and Winona, but a West Pierce Fire spokeswoman says the cause of the fire is still undetermined.

Firefighters were unable to enter the home during the fire because it burned so intensely.

A West Pierce spokeswoman said investigators do not believe there was anybody in the house when it burned, but they’ll be back on the scene this morning to make sure.
