Dolphins tab Hickey as GM

Davie, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Dolphins have named Dennis Hickey as their new general manager.

Hickey spent the past 18 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and had been the club's director of player personnel for the last three. He was also the Bucs' director of college scouting for six seasons after previously working in the personnel and scouting departments.

The Dolphins needed a replacement for Jeff Ireland, who mutually parted ways with the team earlier this month after an 8-8 season.

While Ireland took the fall for a team that lost its final two games and failed to qualify for the postseason, head coach Joe Philbin escaped the chopping block and will remain with the new general manager.

Ireland was elevated to the GM position in January 2008, given full power over football operations and personnel once Bill Parcells agreed to step aside in September 2010, then was rewarded with a multi-year contract extension the following January.

Under Ireland, the Dolphins went a combined 46-50 with a wild card loss to the Baltimore Ravens following a surprising AFC East title in 2008.

Hickey was among a few candidates for the vacancy.

New England director of player personnel Nick Caserio reportedly turned down the position on Saturday night. Others considered included Dolphins assistant GM Brian Gaine and Tennessee executive Lake Dawson.
