New Sounders FC midfielder Marco Pappa scored 26 goals in four seasons with the Chicago Fire. He also has played for the Guatemalan national team, scoring five goals in 30 matches.

Seattle Sounders FC has acquired former MLS All-Star midfielder Marco Pappa, the club announced Friday.

The Sounders used their No. 1 selection in the MLS allocation rankings to acquire the former Chicago Fire star, who had signed with the league earlier this week.

“Marco is a proven and established player who has been very productive in this league,” sporting director Chris Henderson said through a release. “He has the technical quality to create chances for himself and his teammates at any moment. Marco has been able to adapt his game to the international level. He is a high-character guy who brings excitement and quality to our midfield.”

Pappa, 26, began his MLS career in 2008 on midseason loan from CSD Municipal of Guatemala. Over four seasons in Chicago he made 112 appearances with 26 goals and 16 assists. In 2010, he led the Fire with seven goals and added five assists in 25 matches. He was named to the All-Star team and won the MLS award for goal of the year. In 2011, he scored a career-high eight goals.

In 2012-13, he played 11 matches for SC Heerenveen of the Dutch Eredivisie, the top level of soccer in the Netherlands.

Pappa has also made 30 appearances with the Guatemala national team, recording five goals and three assists.

He will be added to the roster pending receipt of his P-1 visa and international transfer clearance. He is expected to join the team in Arizona, where it is conducting early-preseason training.

Pierce County-based Sounders U-23 will begin its Premier Development League season May 16 at Lane United of Springfield, Ore. The home opener is May 25 against the North Sound Seawolves at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner.

The 14-game regular season runs through July 16.

Sounders U-23 will make its 2014 debut May 5, meeting Western Washington at Sunset Stadium in the first of three preseason friendlies.
