Malibu, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 16 points from Malcolm Brooks, the Pepperdine Waves handed an 80-69 defeat to the Loyola Marymount Lions in a West Coast Conference bout at Firestone Fieldhouse.
For the Waves (13-10, 6-5 WCC), Jett Raines added 15 points and eight rebounds, Stacy Davis finished with 12 points and Brendan Lane and Nikolas Skouen each chipped in with 10.
Anthony Ireland led all scorers with 24 points, adding six rebounds for the Lions (11-12, 3-7), while Gabe Levin scored 16 and grabbed eight boards, and Evan Payne scored 13.
Pepperdine shot a healthy 50 percent from the field in the first half, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, as the Waves went into halftime holding a 42-39 advantage. Loyola made 46.2 percent of its field goal tries and 3-of-7 from 3-point range in the period, using a 12-5 scoring advantage at the free- throw line to keep the contest close.
After the intermission, the Waves cooled off somewhat, shooting 43.8 percent from the field, but did connect on 4-of-11 from deep. They held the Lions to just 37 percent shooting in the half. Trailing 66-64 with under seven minutes to play, the Waves ended the game on a 16-3 run to secure the victory.
Pepperdine dominated the boards, outrebounding Loyola 41-29. The Waves also doubled up the Lions in the paint, outscoring them 44-22. The had the edge in bench points as well, 33-18.
